The story of the modification of the HK416 into the M27 IAR with the Marine Corps goes all the way back to the late 1950s, when the Marine Corps began turning in their M1 Garand Rifles and Browning Automatic Rifles (BAR). Based on the AR platform and incorporating the Heckler and Koch proprietary gas piston developed from the company's G36 rifle, the HK416 prevents propellant gases and carbon from fouling the weapon's interior, increasing reliability and reducing wear when compared to traditional gas impingement systems. The M27 IAR is an obvious variation of the original HK416, which Heckler and Koch had originally developed for US Special Operations units as a product improvement over the M4/M16. I enjoyed putting this together and I'm sure it will benefit those who choose to read it anyway. And if this post gets lost amongst all the others in a few weeks that is fine too. If the mods decide to bless this off and find a home for this post and other members find value in this concept and decide to contribute with future submission, then great. Bottom line, nothing really came of this and I figured instead of just waiting around any longer, I'd kick start the idea.

This discussion carried on to why not, instead just update the "World of HK" section of this site with additional and more current information.

Well, the concept of a "gun of the month" was thrown around a few months ago, with the intent being that selected or knowledgeable members would complete a detailed write up/history on a specific HK each month and then these reports would become "sticky" in some section of the forum for user reference.
